As the functional organization gives way to cellular work centers on the shop floor and support departments become multi-disciplined, the human side of the enterprise takes on a new dimension. A partnership environment is fast replacing the traditional approaches to motivation and control, to union and management prerogatives and to compensation and benefits. Labor union preference for work rule preservation has faded in favor of job security through the financial success of the manufacturer.
